to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. >>> we're tracking developing news out of bethel island where a large fire that's burned two homes has flared up again. the fire first broke out at 2:30 this morning on taylor road. claudine wong is live on bethel island with more on why this fire is taking so long to control. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. they've attacked it from the front, from behind and now they are gonna talk it from above. take a look. one home was already destroyed by flames but this fire at this home has burned for more than four hours. you have firefighters on the ground shooting water up into the top level of this home. but it's just not getting to where it needs to get to. firefighters say what they are doing now is getten an aerial truck into place and then they are gonna shoot water above it down on the fire in the hopes that that makes a difference. this fire started burning about 2:30 this morning. that's when the flames were first spotted. we did talk to the woman who lives inside this home. she talked to us about how she w

'm tori campbell. it's monday, march 25th. a car involved in a high-speed chase may also be tied to an armed robbery and two shootings. tara moriarty is live in hayward at the scene of one of those crimes. with details on the chase also and possible gun connections. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. this is where police say an innocent bystander could have been killed. he's doing okay. the police believe the suspects could have been linked to an armed robbery in san jose. here's the intersection where the drive-by shooting happened and police were led on a wild chase through three east bay cities late last night. our cameras caught the chase north through 880. police tried to pull the driver other in hayward for dui and reckless driving. but he sped off through san leandro and oakland. the car spun out of control between 580 between harrison and park and police cars slammed into it to box the car in. officers say people were throwing things out on the roadway. they never found the objects but officers did find weapons inside the vehicle when it finally stopped. >> th
the pentagon is doing enough. here's kyla campbell. >> reporter: dave, some lawmakers say missile intercepters need to be added to the east coast. this is in response a four- minute video showing a simulated attack by north korea on the u.s. and the capitol building. it includes captions and a news agency translated as saying "the white house is caught in the panoramic sight of a long- range missiles" of this video shows north korea is committed to the goal. they add north korea has enough nuclear material to make several crude bombs but the country just has not shown its ability to build a warhead small enough to mount on a long- range missile. chuck hagel says they will move forward with adding missiles in alaska, 14 of them in the last four years. that's after those in california and alabama. we'll tell you what the white house is saying about these threats when i see you next hour. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> today, the senate is expected to approve a spending bill to keep the government funded through the end of september. the m
, campbell, and all the bay area, this is abc7 news. >> welcome back at 4:41. three people are under arrest following a daring but brief prison escape. authorities say two men were hoisted out of a prison in canada on a rope dangling from a helicopter. they were dropped next to a waiting car. police caught up with a man in an hour and they arrested two suspected politicians. the second man surrendered early this morning. investigators say he was forced to take part in the escape. >> not the typical beach fine. $4 million worth of marijuana on a santa barbara beach. authorities found 2,000 pounds of marijuana yesterday. the sheriff deputies made the discovery. here is a picture of the marijuana, 50 plastic wrapped bales. authorities are testing the drugs and other evidence and the boat which investigators believe was used to smuggle the drugs. early this month, $1 million worth of marijuana was found near the air force base. >> pope francis officially takes over the job during ceremonies tomorrow, he faces major challenges in the court and questions of his past. here is that report. >> he ha
now to remember war veterans. it's one of the top stories. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. we begin with the u.s. marine corps. it just has said seven marines have died during a training exercise in nevada. it happened around 10:30 at the hawthorne army depot about 140 miles southeast of reno. all of the men were from a unit based in north carolina. marine officials say a 60- millimeter mortar exploded unexpectliedly. a white house spokesman expressed president obama's sympathy. >> the president sends thoughts and prayers to the families of those lost and injured. we're in the early stages of assess egg the incident. it's a -- assessing the incident. it's a tragedy. >> it's unclear what caused the mortar round to detonate and if more than a single round exploded. the marine corps has ordered an immediate halt worldwide until an investigation is finished. >>> a new effort to health veterans is being launched today ten years after the iraq war began. details are being discussed right now. ktvu's sal castanedo joins us live from san francisco to show us how some marking this day. >> re

and a klieg may colleague may be in legal trouble. good afternoon, i am tori campbell. they are facing that. tara moriarty talked with the auditor about the interference in a bidding process for a construction project. good afternoon. >> reporter: some pretty big fireworks here this morning all over this, it is an auditor's report which says shows two council members crossed the line and mis-used their power in office. the most telling pages are on 16 and 17. the auditor says the parts in red show where council members desly brooks and larry ride interfered with a construction contracting process by either hiring workers or buying supplies. it outlines the bidding process in a 2 million dollar construction contract for the army base. courtney ruby said her probe found a total of 14 instances of city charter violations, a dozen of them by councilwoman brooks and one by reid. >> at no point in time may we ever jiff that justify to break the law, this is the city charter and we sign on to upheld this when we take our oath. >> we caught up with them, who denied the allegations and questioned h
, i am tori campbell. the oakland police department graduate its first academy of police officers in 4 years today, brian flores is live in oakland to explain how this may make the streets safer. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, the goal certainly is to make the streets safer in oakland. as you mentioned the first graduating class since november of 2008, not only a big day for them but also for the families who have sacrificed so much. this is the city's 166th police academy class, 38 officers graduated today, including two from vallejo, the class marks the first of many things, for one the first class under police chief howard jordan and mayor jean kwan and the first diverse class in its history, out of the graduating class 11 different language including those. the chief says it marks a turning point for them and this new class is meant to do that, and he hopes that. he does say this class has boosted the department's morale. >> for the last six months the president of this academy has done that he has given us a sense of hope, pride and honor to see the transformation f

saying the nation's bioterrorism labs are not secure. ktvu's kyla campbell in our washington, d.c. newsroom. you've been reading the report. are any california labs in that report? >> reporter: well, dave, uc berkeley does have what's considered a high biotrirm lab one the report released from the government accountability office does not single out anything. the deal with bioterrorism weapons have not been implemented. the department of agriculture and the centers for disease control monitor the inspections for these labs. the government accountability recommended creating a new single entity to watch over these labs but the federal government says it's not in the best interest of national security to use money and other resources that way. the government accountability office found two main failures with safety and security at some of those 350 labs around the country. we'll dig deeper into those so- called failures when i see you next hour. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> well, "new york times" reports the cia has been helping arab

labs around the country are not secure and the american people are at risk ktvu kyla campbell is in our washington, d.c. newsroom. kyla. >> reporter: the government accountability office released this report just minutes ago saying some of the nation's 350 bioterrorism labs which includes labs in california are not secure. the government accountability office found two main failures that says anthrax and other tools have been transferred to unauthorized facilities and say workers at multiple labs have expired security risk assessment ifsen the department of agricultural and centers for disease control are in charge of inspecting these labs. the usda has shot down many of the recommendations from the government accountability office. it says it over exaggerated risks at the labs and the cdc says it has redundant safety and security at these labs. i'll continue digging through this report again released minutes ago to see if it tinkles out any of these bioterrorism labs in california. >>> time now 6:18. lawmakers may be closer to pass a new o

'm tori campbell. it is thursday march 21st . an elderly woman is in the hospital after she and her husband were run over by a truck. tara is live where the crash happened. >> reporter: good morning. that woman is in critical condition fighting for her life. getting an idea how busy this intersection can be. this is where it happened in one of these four crosswalks right here. it's very busy. muni comes through here . it looked like this last night although obviously darker and a lot more fog. it was pretty dense and authorities say that is what contributed toward the accident. happened off west portal avenue at 9:40 last night. a pick-up truck hit an elderly couple. the man was okay, his wife was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. in the fog, they want to remind folks to drive slowly. but despite the fog, people say drivers simply need to slow down. >> i'm really worried about this intersection right here cause i go over here everyday. i'm afraid everybody's trying to get through the light. i'm afraid i'm going to get hit right here. >> doesn't surprise you? >> no, not a

camp sell belle is in -- campbell is in our washington, d.c. area. >> reporter: he killed a man and woman before taking his own life. the first 911 call came in around 7:30 pacific last night. authorities say an active duty marine shot and killed two others before he shot himself. all three marines were permanent personnel assigned to officer candidate school. since the murder-suicide all the other marines on base and family members have been accounted for. the commander choked up at times during the press conference last hour. he talked about his priority to take care of the marines and families on the quantico base who are dealing with this tragedy. >> i also ask for the support of our neighbors, the community, and their thoughts and prayers as well. for our marines who have lost their comrades in arms. thank you. >> reporter: he says he doesn't expect to release the names of the three marines killed for at least another 24 hours or at least until the primary next of kin is notified. we'll talk about possible motive when i see you next hour. >>> an investigation has cleared tw
